Ecotopia: Review

Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach is an unusual mix of environmentalism, travelogue, and geopolitics. Told from the perspective of a journalist, it describes his journey to the secretive breakaway country of Ecotopia, formed when California, Oregon, and Washington seceded from the US. This new country has adopted progressive policies in virtually every area, from aggressive reuse and recycling to very short work weeks. The protagonist is the first outsider to get an in-depth look at Ecotopia.

The protagonist's journey is somewhat predictable. And at times the exposition seems like a sales pitch for the policies described.

Overall, Ecotopia is an intriguing description of a progressive utopia. The story sometimes seems secondary to the exposition of the policies and lifestyles. But it is still an interesting tale and an enjoyable read.
