Ferryman: Review

Justin Cronin's novel Ferryman is a long novel, like his other work The Passage (review here). However, unlike that earlier review, I couldn't put down Ferryman. From start all the (long) way to the finish, I was intrigued by the characters and the story. And what a story it is! The book starts off as a vaguely Giver-esque island world (with a resentful underclass forced to work for the elites). That setting on its own could probably fill a book of this length, but as things progress and some characters have increasingly bizarre dreams, Cronin starts peeling back the onion revealing whole other layers to this story.

Overall, Ferryman is a creative, fascinating weaving together of multiple storylines. It's a remarkable synthesis of dystopianism, class warfare, and science fiction.
