Memory of Animals: Review

Memory of Animals by Claire Fuller takes place almost entirely on one floor of one building, but the tension and story grow steadily despite of (and in part, due to) the constrained setting.

As a pandemic starts to rage, Neffy signs up for a vaccine trial which requires quarantining in a medical center in central London. In a plot device reminiscent of The Walking Dead, our protagonist awakens, days after having been given the vaccine, to a changed world. The few people left in the suite have voluntarily locked down. Their view from several stories up reveals a world of people either reduced to a stupor by the disease or reduced to basic survival instincts. The medical facility is secure and has some supplies, but as they run low, the group has to decide how to proceed with danger outside from disease and humans alike.

I read Memory of Animals quickly. It is quickly paced and has numerous interesting characters, in an all-too-believable impossible situation.
