Out of the Dawn: Review

Out of the Dawn by P.C. Cast is the immediate sequel to Into the Mist. Picking up where that novel ends, we see the new community preparing for survival in the new, post-green-mist world. Old friends and old enemies make surprising returns. The powers imbued by the mist grow even more supernatural, taking this tale well beyond a sci-fi dystopia deep into the world of fantasy. Some of the mystical occurrences seem like deus ex machina, which made the final act somewhat disappointing. Still, I read this fairly quickly and it was interesting to see what happened to the characters from the first novel.

In short, Out of the Dawn veers away from dystopianism solidly into the world of fantasy. As a sequel to Into the Mist, this isn't wholly unexpected, but it was far afield from my recent sci-fi based reading list. There is also a fair amount of violence, including against minors.
