Widowland: Review

Widowland envisions an alternate postwar England in which Hitler was victorious. England is semi-autonomous but under German rule. The quality of life has declined in general for everyone, but women have suffered the worst, being assigned roles not unlike a slightly less oppressive Gilead.

The protagonist chooses to fight back against the regime while remaining under the radar. Her efforts reach a dramatic climax that is ingenious and memorable.

All told, Widowland is an ultimately rewarding novel about battling against seemingly all-powerful oppression. It has stuck with me more than many other novels.
