Speed Humps

Speed humps (aka speed bumps) are the asphalt hills placed in the middle of the street with the intent of slowing down traffic.

Most communities find that speed humps cause as many problems as they solve. Some people try to drive around them, causing additional traffic problems. They tend to punish residents who drive slowly normally my making them drive even slower, while the fast drivers in beat-up cars tend to sail over speed humps without slowing down.

Still, the board authorized $2900 of homeowners' money in November of 2003 to install a single test speed hump. That speed hump was installed on Overland between Stonegate and Penobscot. Since that time that expenditure has only generated complaints from homeowners, including those who felt it was a mistake and others who were upset that the speed hump signs now mar the view from their living rooms.
