Artemis: Review

Artemis by Andy Weir is a deeply science-based sci-fi caper novel taking place in a Moon colony in the near future. The protagonist, Jazz, is a born-and-raised citizen of the Artemis colony. She is trying to improve her lot in life through various schemes, both above-board and illicit. She receives an offer to commit a crime that will make her wealthier than she has dreamed. Despite her detailed and ingenious planning, based on deep knowledge of science and the lunar systems, the plan goes wrong and the entire colony is suddenly at risk. The risk and its aftermath will dramatically shape the future of Artemis and Jazz herself.

Like The Martian, this book leans heavily on tremendously detailed and complex world-building based on science and technical details. The craft shown in composing the interrelated, detailed parts is remarkable. And the story doesn't disappoint. Just as much as the technical machinations, Jazz' relationships with friends, family, and business partners are rich and intriguing. As in The Martian, profanity is frequent and colorful, so this is best avoided for younger readers.
