Forever and a Day: Review

Forever and a Day continues Anthony Horowitz' series of James Bond prequels. Building on source material from Ian Fleming himself, Horowitz builds the Bond backstory with new characters, more insight into Bond's psyche, and dramatic action.

Bond begins his career as a new member of the elite double-O fraternity. He has to prove his abilities and avenge the death of another 00 agent. Along the way he teams up with a beautiful woman, gambles at a luxurious casino, and has to fight maniacal masterminds. All following the Bond formula, with plenty of novelty from seeing the origin of the agent we know so well from later in his career. In written form you get much more insight into Bond's mindset and motivation, which is lost in the movies.

These are now labeled as 'historical fiction', being set in the fifties. Be ready for plenty of smoking and other behaviors that wouldn't be commonplace today.

Forever and a Day is a well-written Bond novel with plenty of action, vile villains, and fascinating insight from the start of Bond's career.
