Run: Review

Run by Blake Crouch is a post-apocalyptic story set in the near future when a mysterious illness causes large swathes of the population to become irrationally violent, though still conscious and aware. When the protagonist is targeted, he takes his family on the run in a fast-moving cross-country trek in hopes of finding safe ground in a world that has suddenly become dangerous and unpredictable. While the family had been coming apart, the crisis brings them together again, working together to try to survive and find a safe oasis. By the end they make sacrifices for one another, and a flash forward gives some closure in all aspects of the story, both for the family and society as a whole.

This is an exciting, if violent, post-apocalyptic survival tale. You root for the family to come together and find safety. You feel their agony as they are put in horrible situations and fear for their lives and their loved ones. Many parts of the story are detailed and completely engrossing. The nature of the apocalypse seems a little mysterious, even by the end of the book. Overall, this is an exciting and compelling novel.
