Tell Me An Ending: Review
Tell Me An Ending by Jo Harkins is set in a near future world where the Nepenthe corporation has invented a technology that allows selective repression of memories. While some noble uses are imagined, such as repressing memories of violent assaults, many people use it for more pedestrian purposes, like erasing failed relationships. While effective, the treatment leaves a gap that often ends up haunting people, either because of accidental reminders or when a legal challenge forces the company to notify those who had the procedure, who now wonder what memories they are missing.
While Tell Me An Ending is well-crafted, in the end it felt unsatisfying. While it raises truly intriguing questions about memory erasure (Would you do it? Would you regret the memory gap?), in the end it was dark without enough investment in the characters. Intriguing premise, but I didn't find the ending rewarding.
Rating:
- Recommend? No, unless the central premise (memory erasure) truly interests you
- Buy as a gift? No
