The Giver: Review
The Giver is frequently on lists of top dystopian novels, and
it is for me as well. It focuses on the seemingly idyllic life of a
small community set in the future. Like in The City of Ember
and The Village, not all
is as it seems. The lead character is selected to replace the current
Giver, a sort of tribal elder who holds knowledge of the past. Not
only does he get information withheld from most, but once of a drug
cocktail that keeps most of the population docile and unquestioning,
he starts to notice and find other terrifying things about the
community.
By the end of the novel, he has to decide how to resolve his
increasing discomfort with the foundations on which the community is
built.
The author has written several other novels in this same universe,
which I look forward to reading.
