The Way: Review
The Way by Cary Groner is a sci-fi novel with hints of fantasy. In a post-apocalyptic US, decimated by a deadly virus, a man sets out with his trusty crow on a journey to potentially bring a cure to a laboratory on the west coast. He has a telepathic bond with the crow, one of the supernatural elements in the book. Along the way, the man makes friends and encounters deadly enemies. He also is joined by a strong-willed teenage girl who eventually comes to trust him. The journeys through the desolate southwest become dangerous, but the ending brings some hope.
This is what Blood Meridian could have been. A violent, dangerous journey of survival and redemption through the beautiful, if forbidding, southwestern US. This novel, however, has characters that one can root for, and some hope mixed in with danger and loss. If you don't mind the fantastical elements mixed in with the sci-fi, then you should enjoy this novel.
