Wayward Pines Trilogy: Review

Blake Crouch weaves together science fiction, mystery, and dystopianism in the fantastic Wayward Pines Trilogy. The first novel, Pines, covers the protagonist's arrival in the remote forest town of Wayward Pines. An FBI agent sent to track down other missing agents, he has to figure out what has happened to the agents and to himself. The town seems fairly idyllic on the surface, but Ethan soon discovers that the residents live in fear, escape is impossible, and life as he knows it has been changed forever.

In the other two novels, he learns more about the nature of the town and who really controls it (not the sheriff who seems to be the main problem at the start). And as a new apocalypse threatens the town, Ethan has to save friends old and new alike, while finding a way out of the unique predicament they have been unwittingly drawn in to.

I deeply enjoyed this trilogy and the first season of the TV series based on it. The novels are compelling at all levels: the dynamics between the characters, the mystery that is unraveled about the nature of the town, and the dystopian nature of their environment. It was all wrapped together via a deep and believable backstory.
